During my time in Sweden I got to know the country as a peaceful, quiet, yet modern and highly developed country. Yesterday in the early evening, swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh was stabbed and killed in a crowded Stockholm shopping center. The attacker remains yet unknown. Authorities suspect the attack to be motivated by Lindh’s pro-Euro politics. Democracy, the base on which our freedom (our European freedom!) firmly rests is worth dying for, but how far have we come? My condolences go out to Mrs. Lindh’s family and the swedish people, as they have just lost some of their political and civil innocence.
I remember getting the news of the attack in New York, I was just walking across the campus at the University in Skövde, Sweden as one of my friends nearly ran me over with news filled with terror.
To the city that never sleeps, Sept. 11 – 2001 (Bruce has said it all)
There’s a blood red circle
On the cold dark ground
And the rain is falling down
The church door’s thrown open
I can hear the organ’s song
But the congregation’s gone
My city of ruins
My city of ruins
I believe.
