Today the Nobel committee made their first announcement for 2005, and those who know me and my fascination with these prizes will understand my delight at hearing the news.

Congratulations to two great Australians, Prof Barry Marshall and Dr Robin Warren on being awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine “for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease”.

After all, you’ve got to admire a guy who believes in his research so much that he will drink a bacterial solution to prove that he is right. It kind of confirms what most of us scientists know: that the line between genius and madness is rather fine but I’m still happy to keep walking that line.
