In a week where the world watched and rejoiced at the remarkable rescue of two Tasmanian miners after 2 weeks trapped underground, I also see a Tasmanian community that is united in grief. First as we were reminded of their mate who didn’t survive and even closer to home, the tragic accident that took the lives of 4 young university students. As is the case in any small community, it is almost impossible not to know someone who is directly affected and this time is no exception. I watch my students and their friends as they try to learn to cope with their loss and it serves as a timely reminder that it is more than just an interesting story in the newspaper.
