i went to see my local hockey team’s first season game in slovenija. ljubljana just joined our (austrian) league but they already seem to be an enrichment (though beating us). the best about the trip was actually what happened after the game. i walked up to my car which i had parked – quite frankly -in a place where i shouldn’t have parked. anyway i walked up to my car got in and there was a knock on the driver’s side window. i turned to see and it was a mounted policeman, horse and everything. he asked me to park the car in the next spot and get out. i was half-expecting a nice little fine to teach the stupid austrian a lesson. he asked me for my and the car’s papers and i handed them over and then he started to write something down. his german was not only perfect but also very polite. when he was done writing i asked him how big the fine would be and his answer really surprised me: “there is no fine. not this time but i would like to ask you to use the parking area over there next time, it’s half-empty and your car will be safer there as well.” i would have loved to see my face. people like this policeman are the best advertisement for their country, especially with the sometimes shaky relationship between carinthia (kudos to our governor mr. j\u00c3\u00b6rg haider who is doing a doing a great job not letting it improve) and slovenija. he could have fined me and had every right to do so. we always expect people to come to austria, speak german and comply with our rules but when we go abroad we forget about these things. sometimes at least. i speak like three words of slovenijan but i feel even more tempted to learn some more after this encounter. just so i can pay back some respect when i encounter somebody slovenijan in austria. <\/p>\n
