However, no matter how I try to forget what it going on, everywhere I go I am confronted with it, the shops are full of people in a holiday mood, the streets are filled with people sharing valuable time with their loved ones. Even though my sister will arrive in a couple of days, right now I find it impossible to focus on work and other important things when the only place I want to be is at home in Tasmania. Homesickness is a strange beast like that. It gets into your head, you feel it running through your veins and no matter what you do, it can possess your evey waking moment and more.

As I begin to pack my things, deciding what I will keep and what I will leave behind I am however also reminded of what these 3.5 years away have done for me. What I so often referred to, almost jokingly, as my ‘grand world tour’ was in part just that, but in reality meant so much more. I see how I have developed as an entirely independent person, but also how the people I have met along the way have helped to shape who I am and how I feel about the world we all share. I’ve learnt that it doesn’t matter where you are, because there are good people everywhere, and if you look hard enough you will always find them. I now understand how arbitrary political boundaries are. However, the most important thing I have learnt is that almost everything I thought I was looking for, and ended up chasing to the other side of the world, has been sitting, waiting patiently for me on a small island group in the southern hemisphere, unitl I was ready to see it for myself.

Sometimes I wonder if people will recognise me as the same person who left with big dreams and even bigger ideas, or if I have become a stranger. Then I am reminded of a little 2 year old girl, sitting on the kitchen bench in her favourite red shoes, just about to eat a tomato and I realise that 26 years may have passed since then, but she is still there, albeit with bigger shoes now.

The cycle is complete.

Around the world and back again.
