In 1995 I first saw the Austrian flag next to the one of the European Union. Exactly 50 years after World War II had ended, we ended up belonging once again. Really belonging. As of May 1st, 10 new countries will give the EU a new face, a new drive and probably a new direction. Whatever happens (and I am really curious about that) what hopefully will unite all of us, is the common believe in the hard lessons we Europeans had to learn. The common believe that war, at no cost is an alternative to reaching out a hand. The common believe that whatever we do, doing it together makes us stronger. The common believe that by reaching outto welcome whoever stands up for our values, our different cultures and the tolerance between us, is the right thing to do. As of May 1st 2004, there will be 25 golden stars guarding the European Union. Welcome all of you, new and old.<\/p>\n
