Yesterday Australia had the 4th federal election since I reached eligible voting age, and as the politicians’ so often reminded us during the campaign, the people decided. Unfortunately they decided to return the Coalition government for the 4th time nnot only with an increased majority but also with the possibility to gain control of the senate and thus stifle all parliamentary debate.<\/p>\n
Although I accept that I live in a democracy, it still angers and saddens me to see what my fellow countrymen will vote for. To see a country where economic prosperity for some is placed ahead of world-class healthcare and education for all. A country that believes in some strange way that our national security depends on our involvement in conflicts far from home, founded on lies. Today we are reminded of the consequences of our actions within our own region, as we remember the horiffic events of the Bali bombing exactly two years ago. Still I wonder what we have learned in this time.<\/p>\n
Thankfully I also see hope for Australia, especially in the emergence of the Australian Greens as a real political force. As their great leader Bob Brown reminded us, with this current government we will see a much nastier Australia over the next 3 years, but whatever the government does it will not be able to ignore the cries of the greens or their many supporters countrywide.<\/p>\n
